It was an eventful and moving week down in San Francisco, but all things must come to an end. It was back up north we go! But before we started the trek, there was no way we'd leave SF without seeing Alcatraz! ;)
We headed down to Fisherman's Wharf bright and early, to kill some time and have lunch before we went to prison. =P Ironically... hardly any shops were open! One of the biggest tourist destinations in SF, yet we didn't experience the full effect because we simply got there before most places opened their doors. =( Haha. We did, however, witness a bunch of sea lions (Surprise, surprise! I know...), and ate lunch at Bubba Gump (after Forrest Gump). If you want excellent seafood, this is the place to go!! But fair warning: Be prepared to spend more money than you had intended, especially when traveling with a group of guys from youth group! Ha. =S After the Wharf, it was off to Alcatraz!
Alcatraz was a fantastic experience, although it was a little eerie walking the same halls that were once home to the worst criminals in the country. The Island has its fair share of killings and escapes. You can still see where the grenades left their marks and the cells where guards were murdered by prisoners during the Battle of Alcatraz, and the hole a few prisoners made with spoons, amongst other things, to escape. Just to name a couple. We all enjoyed it, though! Definitely recommend taking the tour. They also have tours that take place at night, which freaks me out just thinking about it! Haha.
Finally, it was time to head back to Washington. We left at 3:00pm, the same time we left to come to SF, only this time we devised a solid itinerary: We were going all the way home, all night!!! Crazy? Umm, yes! Worth it? If all road trips are this much fun, I'd do it all over again! ;) But all the credit goes to Justin! He persevered for all 16 hours of drive time, over night, along with the rest of us. (Well, if we started to sleep, he was going to check in to a hotel. No way was he doing this alone, and no way we'd want to spend another night away from home once jumping in the van! =P) When we finally came home, it was around 7:00am the next day! Every one of us crashed. We were spent. But, man, I can't tell you how much fun that was! =D
Justin: The Man, the Myth, the Legend.
P.S. On a side note, only he/we would sync his iPhone audio through the van speakers to the video (the show, Breaking Bad) on his Macbook, all plugged in through a cigarette lighter to electrical socket converter to a standard power strip!!! We were also charging phones and MP3 players! Hahaha. I kinda feel bad for whoever rented the van next, after doing this the entire week, to, from, and everywhere in between! Whoops...
